Are you looking for a way to make a difference in your community? Consider adopting a highway today to keep our roads and oceans free of pollutants and debris! The Hawaii Department of Transportation’s (HDOT) Adopt-A-Highway program is a public service program that provides everything you group needs to pick up litter along state highways.
The program recently launched dual adoption, allowing up to two groups to sign up for each route. This means there are lots of routes to choose from in different parts of the island, giving you the opportunity to pick one that is convenient for your group!
Businesses, community organizations, military companies, and other groups are encouraged to Adopt-A-Highway, but participants must be at least 12 years old. When joining, your group commits to covering a two-mile route for two years, organizing at least four cleanups per year.
The following segments are still available:
HDOT will support your efforts by assisting with route adoption, erecting a highway sign to recognize your group, providing high-visibility safety vests, trash bags, gloves, and safety information, and removing the trash bags from the roadside after your cleanup. Visit our website for instructions on how to apply for a route.
