Across the nation, millions of people will be joining forces this October to celebrate “Make A Difference Month.” In Hawaii, the State of Hawaii Department of Transportation (HDOT), Highways Division is calling all keiki, kupuna, and concerned local residents to “make a difference” by helping prevent storm water pollution throughout October in celebration of Make A Difference Day on October 27, 2018.

On Oahu alone, about 2.2 million tons of waste is generated annually and over 12,204 cubic yards of trash pollute Oahu’s highways. Although these statistics may be alarming, residents have the power to effect change and improve their local areas by getting involved and inspiring others to create a cleaner, safer, and healthier future in their communities.

There’s no better time than the present to begin making steps to improve our island-home by implementing the following trash-free practices:

Dispose of trash properly
Put trash in its respective place, whether that be the trash can or recycling bin.

Recycle
Place recyclable items in the proper bin to keep trash off the highways and roadways. Learn more about what to recycle here.

Volunteer
Get involved and volunteer for the HDOT Adopt-a-Highway program to pick up litter along our highways and help keep debris out of our storm drains. Join and learn more about Adopt-A-Highway today.
