Storm Water Best Management Practice Improvements at Windward Baseyard
DOT-HWYS most recently completed construction at the Windward Baseyard in Kaneohe. Improvements included repairing and repaving old, damaged asphalt and rerouting storm water drainage to reduce the potential for contact with pollution sources and to allow for more accurate storm water quality monitoring.
Storm Water Best Management Practice Improvements at Maintenance Baseyards on Oahu
As part of the Action Plan for Retrofitting Structural BMPs and the Trash Reduction Plan, DOT-HWYS is making improvements and constructing storm water treatment and monitoring systems at several of their maintenance baseyards, including this project at DOT-HWYS Windward Baseyard Facility in Kaneohe.
Trash Reduction Plan
The State of Hawaii Department of Transportation, Highways Division (DOT-HWYS) is doing their part to eliminate trash from state owned roadways and their Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) through the implementation of a Trash Reduction Plan (TRP). Storm Water Treatment BMPs and Maintenance
As of the summer of 2018 there are over 100 PBMPs actively treating storm water runoff throughout DOT-HWYS Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4); and there are many more in the planning and design phases.
High-Performance Mulch Application

Eroded Slope Repair
As part of the Permanent Erosion Control Program, DOT-HWYS completed permanent repairs at thirteen sites in 2017, in addition to fourteen sites completed in 2016. These erosion repair projects occurred along the H-1 and H-2 freeways and Kamehameha and Kalanianaole Highways, and were managed by DOT-HWYS’ Salt Lake and Lower Halawa field offices.
Downspout Filters
As part of the Action Plan for Retrofitting Structural BMPs DOT-HWYS recently installed downspout filters under the H-1 viaduct at the Pearl City Baseyard. These downspout filters capture trash and sediment and also contain an oil boom that reduces oil and grease from roadway storm water runoff.
Ala Wai Watershed Storm Water Best Management Practices on Oahu Project
In order to keep roadways safe for driving, they are designed and constructed to allow storm water runoff to drain quickly and efficiently to the road shoulder.
