December 5 is International Volunteer Day, established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1985. It’s a time to celebrate the global impact of volunteers, promote opportunities, and encourage community involvement.
On Oʻahu, there are countless ways to help, including participating in the Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation’s Adopt-A-Highway program. By “adopting” a two-mile stretch of a highway for two years, volunteers commit to hosting cleanups at least four times annually. This low-commitment initiative is the perfect opportunity for those passionate about keeping our roadways and storm drains clean.
There are still routes available to adopt! It’s easy to get involved: Visit our Adopt-A-Highway website to apply. Before each cleanup, request supplies at least one week in advance, make sure all participants watch the Safety Training video and submit release forms for minors if needed. After cleanups, leave the filled rubbish bags along the route, make note of their location, and submit the Rubbish Removal Form within two days.
The Adopt-A-Highway program is a meaningful way to make a big difference! It benefits the environment and offers a rewarding experience for everyone involved. Each year, Adopt-A-Highway volunteers pick up nearly 1,594 bags of trash and clean over 880 miles of road. Apply for a route today to join the community dedicated to keeping Hawaiʻi beautiful for future generations!
